What is customized employment?

Customized employment is a process for supporting individuals with achieving competitive integrated employment or self-employment (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). More specifically, customized employment is an individualized, flexible, and personalized process to develop employment opportunities that meet the needs of the individual and employer. With customized employment, the individual is hired and paid by the employer. Essential elements of customized employment include the following: (a) negotiation of job duties, (b) individualization of job tasks for one person, (c) pay of at least minimum wage, (d) employment occurring in community-based or individually-owned businesses, and (e) presumption that an individual’s work will meaningfully contribute to the business (U.S. Department of Education, n.d.).
